2010 Tupari Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley, Malborough, New Zealand $30

Tasted Wednesday 23 March 2011

As a general rule, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is not a wine that I tend to get excited about but rules are meant to be broken and the Tupari is my rule breaker.

This is a single vineyard wine of sophistication and concentration. Its nose is a blend of minerality, citrus zest and white peach and the palate is a seamlessly balanced integration of acidity and creamy textures that lead into a long and focused finish. A wine that is equally as comfortable on a table with fresh seafood as it is with roasted free range chicken. Oh don’t forget to have loads of fresh herbs, they would just sing with this wine!

Grown in Awatere Valley, a sub-region of New Zealand’s spiritual home of Sauvignon Blanc; Marlborough. The Awatere Valley is quite an exposed area and often experiences a long slow ripening season which results in wines that are balanced in flavour, intensity and fruit structure.

Having only just arrived in Australia, there are no reviews to date but by all accounts this was a cracker of a vintage! See notes below. (Liz)

What a vintage to kick the new decade off with! After a superbly structured 2009 vintage the 2010 outperformed its predecessor “100 to 1”. Ripening advanced rapidly, and the harvest delivered on time, with some of the later ripening vineyards looking absolutely stunning – not just structurally but already demonstrating an amazing array of intense flavours throughout ferment. www.newzealandwineonline.com.au
