2008 René Mure Cote Du Rouffach Riesling $38

Tasted Wednesday 9 March 2011

A wine crafted from bio-dynamically farmed vineyards that is rich and fine on the palate while showing hints of minerality intermingling with lime, pear and stone fruits on the nose.Wines from Alsace, located in France’s north-east, benefit from the long slow ripening conditions that ensure an abundance of flavour and an exceptional balance of acidity in their structure. The palate is supple and opulent, the texture is delightfully layered.

A varietal that can be misunderstood at times, Riesling makes some of the world’s truly great wines. Often more expressive of their site and powerful in their subtlety, than other varietals, this Cote du Rouffach is no exception. I fantasised about duck liver parfait while I tasted this – but I was just as happy to enjoy it on its own. An off dry style that requires nothing more than a late afternoon and a willing wine glass!

Rated 88 points in Wine Spectators’ November 2010 edition.
